Steamed buns
STEAMED buns produced by Xinghualou, a famous-name Shanghai supplier of mooncakes, will be sold at local supermarkets, including Lianhua and Hualian chain stores, starting in June.
The government asked the company to start making the popular Chinese buns after a scandal involving chemically tainted steamed buns sold by another company, Shanghai Shenglu Food Co, caused public outrage. Lianhua and Hualian were the main outlets for Shenglu buns.
Municipal officials said they hope the appearance of steamed buns under the venerable Xinghualou label will help restore public confidence in food safety. Xinghualou has a factory in Minhang.
