Stock up to support annual charity project

THE annual "Giving Tree" project is underway and Minhang Charity Foundation encourages community support to help students from poor families.

The project was launched in 2002 by Joanne Price, an American expat living in Pudong New Area, with the help of Shanghai International Community Center.

During the past seven years, it has expanded from the eastern bank of the Huangpu River to the city's western side.

Today more than 4,000 people participate, including eight international schools, four expat organizations in Shanghai, seven international communities and 16 foreign-invested enterprises.

"These people are very enthusiastic about charity activities, hoping to give more care and love to the place they are living in," said Ye Xuan, director of the Shanghai International Community Center.

Each donor of a gift bag worth 150 (US$22) to 200 yuan, made up of clothes, shoes, scarf, hat, toys and some stationery, will learn the profile of the sponsored child.

People can also donate money or other items to support the project.
