Stressed out by city life? Come and visit 'the oxygen bar'
LIVING in a crowded, noisy modern city, urban people often yearn for the heart-soothing environment of plants and flowers. In Minhang, nature lovers at least have a place to go to wrap themselves in the beauty and tranquility of greenery -- the Beiqiao International Horticultural Exposition Garden.
Think of it as an oxygen bar in the city.
The garden, which opened in April, occupies an area of 57,600 square meters. It's not far from the urban area -- only 16 kilometers from Hongqiao Airport, 50 kilometers from Pudong Airport and 20 kilometers from People's Square -- but it's easy to get to in a short 80-meter walk from the Beiqiao station of Metro Line 5.
The garden is one of the sightseeing stops recommended for Expo tourists by the Shanghai Agricultural Committee and the Shanghai Tourist Bureau.
It's not hard to see why. The garden features floral arrangements, a pet market and other gardening-related shops. It's a great place to visit if you are a bonsai aficionado.
Pet lovers can do more than just walk the dog here. The garden is full of pet shops selling puppies, kittens, parrots and other birds. There is also a range of pet supplies for those who like to pamper their pooches, and the prices are pretty reasonable, too.
Some say you can find pet supplies here that can't be found anywhere else in the city.
The exposition garden is not only for people to enjoy on a visit. It's also designed to encourage residents to do a bit of gardening at home, be it on plots adjacent to villa units or even in pots on balconies.
Gardeners will find furniture and a full range of gardening supplies on sale at the site.
And for those who aren't quite sure about their prowess as "green thumbs," gardening experts are on hand to lend advice on how to design and maintain gardens, or even how to turn drab balconies into colorful floral displays.
Traditional Oriental art is also popular in the garden. Visitors will find wood carvings, calligraphy and paintings on display to browse and even buy.
Beautiful chinaware and painted pottery from Thailand successfully mix the elements of classical and modern art in designs to suit every taste.
The garden features a two-story exhibition hall covering 2,500 square meters. The two floors are connected by a glass staircase.
The hall's facilities include conference rooms, performing stages and Internet and wireless connections.
The Horticultural Exposition Garden is a new feature of Minhang, and officials said it will be improved as time goes by with more facilities and services. The goal is to give the public a complete and fully multifunctional agricultural attraction.
The next time you are feeling stressed out and tired of the noise and fast-pace of urban life, think of the Beiqiao International Horticultural Exposition Garden as place to get back to nature.
