Students sample opera
ABOUT 20,000 middle school students across Minhang are being given free passes to Peking Opera performances as part of a district effort to promote traditional Chinese culture.
The program runs from November 21 to December 2.
Students in groups are taken to the Shanghai City Theater for performances by the Shanghai Traditional Opera School, an affiliate of the Shanghai Theater Academy.
The performances aren't exactly standard fare. They include discussions of the famous roles of Peking Opera, the elaborate costumes, the articulate motions, and the skills of acting and on-stage combat.
Students will be able to ask questions and even take a turn on stage, if they are so inclined.
The first group of more than 1,000 students went to the theater on November 21.
"I think it is a good way to promote Peking Opera among students because the performances will give them a direct experience with the charm of this gem of Chinese culture," said Yang Guang, a music teacher at the Xinzhuang Middle School.
Two performances will be presented every day during the event.
Minhang has a tradition of offering free admission to fine arts events to try to encourage appreciation among the young.
To date, students have been treated to performances of symphonies, folk music and plays. This is the first time Peking Opera has been added to the list.
The event is sponsored by the Minhang Education Bureau.
Peking Opera is deemed as the gem of traditional Chinese theater and one of the cultural treasures of China. It combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics.
