Survey eyes aged care needs in the neighborhood
THE Xinzhuang and Jiang-chuan areas of Minhang conducted community evaluations of resident senior citizens to ascertain what levels of care were most appropriate and most in demand.
Shanghai’s aging population is putting a strain on care services, and Minhang is attempting to document the situation.
The two evaluation drives, lasting for eight months, were aimed at the most high-risk populations, according to the Minhang District Civil Affairs Bureau.
“There are six levels in the evaluation,” said an official with the bureau. “Levels 1 to 3 relate to seniors who can continue to live in their own homes. Levels 4 and 5 involve those who need care outside their homes, and Level 6 relates to those who need a high-level of nursing home care, where beds are most in shortage.”
Some 158 people participated in the evaluation, and 83 of them were relocated to nursing care homes, said the bureau.
The evaluation assessed health issues, social connections and financial conditions of each person examined to ensure the fairness.
The bureau said it will seek to increase the numbers of nursing home beds and medical care professional to address demand. Further evaluations will also be scheduled in the district.
