Suzhou Embroidery
WU County in Suzhou, where the embroidery is said to have originated, is known for its quality silk and silkworm breeding. The two industries both blossomed in their synergy.
Silk pieces were embroidered onto a map during the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-280). During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the work of famous painters like Tang Bohu and Shen Zhou was also turned into embroidered pieces.
The techniques of Suzhou embroidery were further developed during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 1904, Shen Yunzhi, a Suzhou embroidery master, presented eight intricate works to Empress Dowager Cixi in celebration of her birthday. Cixi was no doubt very pleased.
