Take me to jail, please!
A jewelry store robber was caught only 13 minutes after a heist on Jiangchuan Road. No wonder it was so easy. He wanted to be nabbed.
Police said the suspect, surnamed He, said he wanted to be arrested as a means to escape creditors.
The suspect went into a store in the Meihuiquan Business Plaza one evening, armed with a kitchen knife and a hammer. He smashed the glass of a jewelry counter and made off with a handful of necklaces, according to the Minhang police.
“I saw on TV that this is the fastest way to go behind bars,” He later explained to police.
A SWAT dispatched to the scene found the robber already captured by customers. “Originally, I didn’t want to run, but I better because I might get beaten up by onlookers if I just waited there,” He told police. “I didn’t use the knife because I didn’t want to hurt anybody.”
A passer-by, surnamed Wang, had a slightly different version of events. He said He had tried to knife him when being cornered by the customers.
The police said He, 33, from Yunnan Province, is a former soldier who has a family and a stable job in Shanghai. He apparently ran up large debts after becoming obsessed with online gaming.
The police said the case is still under investigation.
