The National Chinese Character Dictation Competition
Co-organized by the State Language Committee and the China Central Television, the competition was inspired by the time-honored national spelling bee contest in the United States.
In 2013, 32 teams, all from high schools across China, joined the competition. They were required to write down phrases or idioms dictated by the host. This year the competition is returning.
Some of the phrases used in 2013 were relatively complicated characters from modern Mandarin. As the competition progressed, the characters became more obscure, plucked from ancient Chinese texts.
Classics such as “The Dream of the Red Mansions” (“Hong Lou Meng”) and “Classics of Mountains and Seas” (“Shan Hai Jing”) are frequently used to provide characters and phrases for the competition.
Organizers said people nowadays are so into computers that they are beginning to forget how to write Chinese characters and have forgotten ancient ones altogether. The national contest is meant to remind the public of their rich linguistic heritage.
