The game is up for inept counterfeiter
A MAN convicted of counterfeiting banknotes in Minhang was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to the Minhang District Procuratorate.
According to authorities, the man, surnamed Wang, found someone selling counterfeit notes on an online chat group and bought 1,500 yuan (US$228) of the fake money. But when he received the forged cash, he found the notes so poorly copied that they couldn鈥檛 be passed off as real money.
The ruse, however, inspired Wang to make his own fake cash. He bought a printer and special paper, and downloaded the renminbi pattern from the Internet. He figured out color modulation and how to replicate anti-counterfeiting 鈥渟trings鈥 on the notes.
The experiment lasted for months before he finally thought he thought he had replicated a 鈥減erfect鈥 note. He advertised sales of the money on an online chat group. Some days later, a man surnamed Shao, from Jiangsu Province, asked him to send some samples, authorities said.
Shao wasn鈥檛 satisfied with the quality of note, but he was willing to help Wang sell the note to others.
Eventually, Shao became Wang鈥檚 manager in the sale of counterfeit notes.
Last May, Shao was arrested in Jiangsu Province. He coughed up his accomplice with Wang to police.
Authorities said Wang had forged notes with a face value of 80,000 yuan. Apart from the 10-year prison sentence, he was also fined 20,000 yuan, prosecutors said.
According to the Chinese law, currency counterfeiting criminals would sentenced three to 10 years in jail. Last year the law makers abolished the death penalty for the crime.
