Theater spotlights local arts
THE Shanghai City Theater in Minhang District now ranks fifth among the scale of performances in Shanghai.
In the past three years, about 450,000 people attended performances, with up to 80 percent of seats filled.
The theater is now considered among the 10 best in the city.
"Shanghai City Theater will introduce more excellent performances from home and abroad, and will take further steps to enhance the cultural appreciation of local residents," said Fang Yongnian, vice general manager of East Shanghai International Culture, Film and TV Group, the operator of the theater.
"We offer tickets at 30 percent cheaper than theaters in downtown areas, while maintaining a high quality of shows," Fang said.
More shows
The theater staged only 90 shows in its first year of 2009. That number has now grown to 280.
Fang said the cultural lectures that accompany many of the performances have helped lift the role of theater in people's lives.
Lectures are held twice a month on Sunday afternoons. Each is carefully designed and produced by a professional team, featuring talks, demonstrations and interactive multi-media.
About 15,000 people have attended these sessions in the past year.
Recently, the theater is making efforts to expand its offerings into traditional Chinese folk music, building an exhibition hall to display folk musical instruments and historical information.
