They won鈥檛 miss their bus stops any longer
Residents in Yangjiagang and Shipinong villages, who have only Huacao Bus Line No. 5 serving their communities, were surprised recently to find that all stops on line are now announced in Shanghai dialect as well as standard Mandarin.
ìItís much easier to understand the stops when they are announced in Shanghainese,î said passenger Yang Songhua.
That is especially true for elderly residents, who traditionally speak the Shanghai dialect and arenít as familiar with Mandarin as younger riders.
Sometimes older passengers have missed stops because they were too slow to pick up on Mandarin announcements.
Only traffic link
Huacao Line No. 5 was opened two years ago. It connects the Huacao Health Center, a supermarket, kindergarten and elderly care facilities. ìThis bus line is a vital link in our lives,î Yang said. ìNow it is warmer service for elderly people.î
Chen Weimin, a driver on the route, said he and others in the bus service ìclean the buses carefully every day and make sure that vents for air conditioners are cleared.î
They also help elderly passengers and women with small children on and off the buses, Chen said.
