Thousands of bookworms flock to join rebuilt library

AFTER the reopening of Minhang Library, more readers have visited and they are borrowing more books than ever.

Now, there are often more than 5,000 readers visiting the library everyday on the weekend, while never more than 1,000 visited the old library each day.

At weekends it can be hard to find a seat, and many readers choose to stand while reading books and newspapers.

The number of users has also increased rapidly since the library was rebuilt. Each month there are at least 5,000 people who apply for library cards, hitting 300 on some busy days.

The old library issued about 200 cards a month, officials said. According to Shanghai Library, the number of new applications for library cards in Minhang District now tops all the other districts in Shanghai.

New services

To satisfy more readers and save their waiting time, Minhang Library has already introduced several new services to save time. Readers can now borrow and return any kind of books at any window.

People applying for library cards can now get their applications signed and receive their card on the spot.

The library also reminds readers that the peak of card applications is usually at weekends. So if you apply from Monday to Friday, the waiting time will be much shorter.

Besides that, if you finish the borrowing process a little earlier instead of waiting until 4:30pm when the library closes, you can avoid peak crowds. Opening hours will be extended in summer, with closing times delayed to 8pm. However, librarians warned that some bad behavior has appeared along with the increase in the number of visitors.

When parents take their children to the library, some let their children run away and chat loudly, while others allow their child to shout in the reading room.

The library reminds its readers to respect regulations, keep silent in the library and ensure a healthy environment for all users.
