Tips on what's good to eat
OLD street tangyuan (rice ball or sweet dumpling)
The tangyuan shop at 26 Southern Street in the old town is already famous among tourists. There're many kinds of sweet dumplings available, with various stuffing -- meat, sweetened bean paste and black sesame.
Smelly bean curd
It's so-called smelly, while it's not all. These fried bean curds can be found almost anywhere throughout the town. You can even smell it when you haven't seen it but despite the smell it's actually delicious. A Shanghainese saying describes the smelly bean curd thus: "smells bad, tastes good!"
Crabapple Cake
An oven-fresh crabapple cake is covered with a golden skin and is sweet-smelling. Bite when still hot and you'll find the skin is made of fried sugar. Inside, it's soft cake with a sweetened bean paste stuffing. They're a bargain at 1 yuan (15 US cents) each but you may spend some time in the queue.
Sugar-coated fruit on stick
It's a traditional Chinese snack originally only made of haws, but more and more fruits are now being used, such as strawberry and orange. These are bunched on a bamboo stick with a thin cover of sugar for a sweet and sour taste. It combines rich nutrition with a good look.
Plain sliced lamb
A local region specialty, it's lamb with delicious soy poured on. Very tasty and soft but not mashed, it is more enjoyable served with liquor. If you cannot finish it at once, you can also take some back home.
Steamed crab meat dumpling
Crystal clear, thin wrapper, rich stuffing and thick pottage ? you'll fall in love with it at first bite. It also offers some half-finished products for customers to take home. However, the problem is the same as what you'll endure for a crabapple cake -- waiting in the queue, sometimes longer than for the crabapple cake.
