Traffic safety remains a problem
HEAVY vehicles have become major killers on Minhang roads, with 42 percent of traffic-related deaths in the first half of this year blamed on dump trucks, the district's traffic authorities said.
But traffic safety campaigns appear to be making inroads.
In the first six months of this year, traffic accidents dropped 12 percent from a year earlier to 108, and vehicle-related deaths fell 22 percent to 35.
Ignoring traffic lights and driving on the wrong side of the road were among major causes cited for casualties.
Drivers who have had licenses for five years or less were responsible for 34 traffic accidents, eight deaths and 30 injuries, traffic authorities said.
Wuzhong and Jidi were among roads with the highest number of accidents. Beidi, Hongmei and Zhongchun roads and the Huqingping Highway were also among traffic hazard zones.
District authorities said they will beef up road signage, traffic signals and personnel on the roads to try to improve traffic safety. In the first half, 296,693 traffic offenses were reported involving drunk driving, running red lights, illegal parking and vehicle overloading.
