Treasures await at Jiuxing Market
JIUXING Market is the place to go for not only home decor items, but treasures such as aquariums, fish, crabs, tea and hand-carved tables.
On the northern side of Xingyou Road, shops sell all you could need for a home aquarium.
Though covering a relatively small space, each shop features a rich collection of goods, with colorful ranges of fish, tailor-made fish tanks and pumps.
Prices here are much cheaper, with a 1-meter fish tank retailing at about 300 yuan (US$44).
One shop sells popular acrylic screens which show pictures of fish swimming in water and thus save electricity and the trouble of keeping fish, making them a smart choice for time-poor families.
Root carving
Mingmu Root Carving from Fujian Province enjoys a high reputation. This traditional Chinese art form has a showroom at Shanghai Exhibition Hall, on the second floor at Building 4, No. 1 Xingyou Road.
It's been over 20 years since Mingmu Company started business in 1986. With the growing popularity of oolong and pu'er tea among Shanghai people, tea tables carved from tree trunks and roots have become fashionable.
These hand-carved tables and stools price from 2,000 yuan. Products include large and small ones.
Larger tables are suitable for public buildings such as hotels or offices, while smaller sets would be suitable for family use.
Seafood, snacks
The Jiuxing Aquatic Market is at the corner of Hongxin Road and Jiuxing Road with about 30 stands.
You can find fish from home and abroad with lower prices than other markets.
There is a street serving just crabs from Taihu Lake, which are best at this time of year.
Compared with crabs from Yangcheng Lake, the Taihu ones are bigger and fewer of them are faked.
Some customers often complain there is no place to eat at Jiuxing Market, but actually a 30-meter-long snack street nestles along the corner of Hongxin and Xingyou roads.
Stalls sell noodles, wonton, as well as specialties from Anhui, Hebei and Hunan provinces.
Tea
The 15,000-square-meter tea zone has about 500 shops near bustling Xingdong Road, which lies to the east of Hongxin Road and north of Xingyou Road.
Teas here come from famous tea-growing areas such as the provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangsu.
Here you can spend hours trying out all the different types of tea grown in China, such as oolong, green tea, flower tea, black tea, herbal teas and smoked teas.
Various teapots and tea sets are also available at the market, making the perfect gift.
