Treasures of the junk shops

FOR many older people, second-hand shops are familiar haunts. The famous Shanghai Huai Guo Jiu Junk Shop was one of their favorite places to find treasures. But in recent years the junk shops of Shanghai have been disappearing one after another.

But numbers of Japanese and South Koreans living in Gubei and Hongqiao areas are getting into the habit of bringing second-hand goods back with them and several junk shops have appeared in Minhang District. A lot of young people also like to browse in these stores.

Fu Jiu Shan Second-hand Shop, established in 2001, is one of the more established second-hand shops with goods mostly from Japan and South Korea. It has three outlets in Shanghai now, with its warehouse and flagship shop in Minhang.

The warehouse covers several thousand square meters and offers nearly 10,000 items including home appliances, daily necessities, furniture, office equipment, musical instruments, audio and video products. The products are sold at between 30 percent and 50 percent off the original price. Some new products come directly from Japan with a price tag much lower than in regular markets.

The second-hand products here are quite attractive. In the sofa area there are dozens of sofas with prices as low as 880 yuan (US$129) for a suite of sofas with plant patterns.

In the sports area, you can find every brands of golf products. The shop owner says South Koreans like to play golf and they sell the clubs before returning to their homes in South Korea, so the golf products here are of good quality. A set of 13 quality clubs costs only between 1,000 yuan and 2,000 yuan.

In the household goods area, all kinds of well designed Japanese tableware are available for about 10 yuan each, with a set costing around 100 yuan. There are plenty of Japanese books, from classics to cartoons and novels.

The shop reminds customers that for second-hand home electrical appliances there is a warranty of one month and for new items the warranty is one year. Currently it has moved from its original location on Wanyuan Road to Hongzhong Road.

Sairui Life Resources Shop is near Longming Road where there are many residential areas. The shop's name in three languages 掳?-- Japanese, Korean and Chinese 掳?-- shows the characteristic of this shop: the products are mainly from Japan and South Korea and are for sale in China.

The shop has been enjoying good business since opening more than one year ago. The shop is filled with carefully selected items: imported hair-curlers from South Korea, ornate lamps and porcelain tableware from Japan.

The shop owner says they have about 500 products including kitchen utensils, office equipment and clothing. For second-hand appliances, they offer a one-month guarantee.

The shop not only has second-hand products, they have also brand-new goods as well set apart by the color of the tag. A high definition monitor can be had for 4,300 yuan.
