Tributes forcop killedon the job
A Minhang traffic policeman died after a car he tried to stop for making an illegal turn sped up and dragged him along the pavement.
Mao Shengquan, 32, was working a routine shift at the junction of Wuzhong and Hongxu roads when the incident occurred on the evening of March 11.
The driver, surnamed Sun, was taken into custody. He later expressed great regret for what he did, police said.
Mao was dragged for more than 10 meters by the car before he fell over, striking his head on the pavement. He was pronounced dead five hours after being rushed to hospital.
Police said Sun told them he was rushing to get to People’s Square to meet someone, and made an illegal turn to try to circumvent heavy traffic. He said he was momentarily furious when Mao signaled for him to pull over, so he sped up. Sun claimed he didn’t know his car was dragging Mao along.
Liu Zhengjin, a passer-by, witnessed the whole incident.
“I saw the policeman on the ground,” he said. “There was blood everywhere.”
Mao was a member of the Minhang Security Bureau’s Traffic Police Detachment. His widow is expecting their first child next month.
The death caused an outpouring of public condolences.
Bouquets of flowers were put on the roadside greenbelt near the accident site.
Ye Ting, a friend and colleague of Mao’s, said the young officer was a longtime car lover.
“He chose to be a traffic policeman because he believed it was an honor,” Ye said. “But he could never have imagined he would sacrifice his life for it.”
