Upstairs, downstairs: mechanical aid at hand
MINHANG has expanded the rental of “stair climbers” for disabled and elderly residents living in buildings without elevators.
Since last year, more than 6,000 residents have benefited from the service, which was launched on a trial basis as part of Shanghai’s campaign to improve daily lives through the application of technology
Disabled and people 60 and older who have difficulty climbing stairs have access to the “stair-climbing” machines free of charge.
Residents who rent the machines get 26 free uses every month. Beyond that, they have to pay 65 yuan (US$9.40) for continued use.
Among the happy recipients of the machines is a woman surnamed Ji in Meilong Town. She is disabled and has to go to the hospital three times a week for dialysis treatment.
The machines are supplied by Shanghai Zhanda Industrial Co.
