Veteran makes bulletin

A special weekly bulletin called "Health Information" has become popular among residents of Jinxiujiangnan Neighborhood of Hongqiao Town.

It is published by Qian Hongfei, an 80-year-old resident of the neighborhood who has been issuing it for the past seven years.

Qian moved to Jinxiujiangnan Neighborhood at the end of 2002 and was looking for something to do to stay busy in his retirement.

An idea occurred to him one day when he was reading the newspaper: as there's always health news in the papers, why not pull it into a single publication to share with neighbors?

Qian began to collect newspapers, pulled out the health items, pasted them together and printed them on A4 sheets.

The first issue of Health Information came out in October 2003. He delivered copies to mailboxes in the neighborhood and also posted a bigger version on the announcement board. Readers' responses were good from the start, greeting it as practical and easy to read.

Since then, Qian has attracted more and more readers, with over 90 old people becoming regular "clients" in his neighborhood.

The bigger version is now also posted in other neighborhoods such as Xijiao Village and Fengduguoji Neighborhood.

Qian edits and delivers all the issues by himself and by now he's published 300 editions.

He spends one or two hours a day collecting information from various newspapers and when he visits friends and relatives, he always browses through their papers.

If he finds a good newspaper, he'll order it immediately.

His information resources have developed from four to five newspapers to currently over 10.

At the beginning, producing an issue was the hardest challenge because Qian had no regular printing facility.

But Hongqiao Town community offered him a printing machine and paper and even subscribed to some newspapers for Qian's collection.

With so many supporters, Qian has become more confident about his work and its acceptance in the community. "I'll carry on as long as I can," he says.
