Volunteer team does a 'smelly' service

CLOGGED drains and sewer pipes are always a problem for many Minhang District residents.

A group of employees from the district?s drainpipe maintenance businesses and water authority has been working the past nine years, on a volunteer basis, to tackle the problem. Their job duty normally is to maintain drainage pipelines up to the last kilometer, where they become the responsibility of property owners or property management companies.

Last kilometer

Most of the problems occur in that last kilometer.

The volunteer crew now numbers 11. In the past, team members had to clear drainpipes by hand. Nowadays, they use high-pressure water guns to dislodge blockages.

The worst part of the volunteers? job is enduring the smell. òWe have to stand the stink,ó said a volunteer surnamed Zhou. òBut considering the relief we provide by unclogging drains, we think the effort is worth the sacrifice.ó

The group is expanding its service coverage area to more communities in Minhang.

Officials from local water authority said that the volunteers save fees of up to 400,000 yuan (US$64,000) a kilometer by unclogging pipelines in older residences.
