Water towns reap tourism benefit
Minhang District’s ancient towns and other attractions were big tourism draw cards during the recent Spring Festival holiday, with about 322,000 visitors logged during the seven-day break.
A third of tourists went to the popular old water town of Zhaojialou to welcome in the Year of the Horse, according to the Minhang District Tourism Bureau.
Zhaojialou traces its origins back to the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Many of its old buildings have been restored.
“The town has great atmosphere for the Chinese New Year,” said Ruan Xiaocong, a resident living in the Xinzhuang area.
“The performances that took place there were a feast for folklore lovers. And the fresh vegetables in the town market are always worth a shopping stop.”
The more centrally located old town of Qibao is always a favorite of visitors. During the holiday, it received around 150,000 tourists. Among the most popular attractions there are the snack food stalls lining cobbled streets. A big favorite was tangyuan, or glutinous rice dumplings.
ìI always love tangyuan sold on Qibaoís old streets,î said tourist Pei Qinruo. ìAnd Chinese New Year is time for eating the snack because it symbolizes family reunions.î
Another attraction in the district is the Jinjiang Amusement Park, though it has been somewhat been eclipsed by the newer, glitzier Happy Valley theme park in the Songjiang District. New acrobatic acts at Jinjiang helped attract more than 70,000 visitors during the recent holiday, bringing in 3 million yuan (US$419.8) in revenue, the tourism bureau said.
Travel companies handled 2,480 tourists in 113 tour groups to Minhang, an 80-percent increase from Spring Festival last year.
