Wheelchair prototype offers 'mod cons' to the disabled
AN intelligent wheelchair will make its debut in the World Expo 2010 Shanghai pavilion "Expo 2010 Life & Sunshine" for disabled people.
This high-tech product can communicate with the owner and follow his/her orders. It now sits in the lab of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
According to Professor Chen Weidong, who is in charge of the wheelchair project, the magic chair has a computer control system as the "brain," a laser detector as its "eyes," a microphone as "ears," and a speaker as the "mouth."
After getting orders from the operator, the chair would ask for confirmation. Then it sets off and can avoid obstacles or turn at corners swiftly. The operator can set the speed of the chair and a camera in front of the seat even reads sign language.
The chair is the result of more than three years' research and development by the teachers and students in Jiao Tong University. Currently its price is equivalent to that of a family car. The wheelchair project team is now working to lower the cost and make the price more "customer-friendly."
The team has even made a removable mechanical arm for the chair. It can follow orders to open doors, turn on lights or even send drinks to the operator.
