Where children are taught how to be colorful and not copycats

THOSE who have taken art courses probably won't forget the traditional concept of learning through copying. However, this concept is being challenged by Xumin Creative Studio on Luoxiu Road in Minhang District, where there's no copying or crayons, but anything that can be used to stimulate the imaginations of children.

Learning by copying restricts children from actively participating in the creative process of drawing. Copying is not the expression of their own understanding of art, but an obstacle to discourage them from freely drawing, according to the studio. "What we value most is the experience kids get by drawing from their imagination."

Anything can be used as a tool for drawing, including hands, chopsticks, tooth-picks, erasers, bread, or ropes. The studio encourages children to draw with paint rather than crayon. Drawing with crayons can tire little children's hands -- their hand muscles are still growing and it may result in a future fear of drawing, says Xu Min, the founder of the studio.
