Wishing fallen leaves were left alone
WHEN the temperature is dropping and the wind blowing, trees beside the roads change colors silently.
With red, yellow and green leaves being blown among each other in the sunshine, it paints a beautiful picture. Even the fallen leaves make this distinct seasonal scene perfect.
So much so, many Minhang residents wonder whether the Minhang Landscaping Administration Bureau can let fallen leaves on the ground stay for some time to display the beautiful autumn scene instead of sweeping them away immediately.
According to the administration, since 2001, Minhang has carried out a "Spring & Autumn Scene Project" with the entire city. Originally, 75 percent of the trees in Minhang were camphor trees, and the color was always too simple.
But the project introduced various trees which have leaves that change color in different seasons.
After about ten years of cultivation, those colorful trees have now grown up.
In these late autumn/early winter days, they often surprise Minhang citizens with magnificent scenes.
"Fallen leaves in this season are extremely beautiful," says Xinzhuang resident Chen Yanjun. "I miss the soft feeling when I walk on the street covered with fallen leaves. The sound makes me feel very comfortable."
We asked 30 Minhang citizens at random if they would like the fallen leaves to remain and 28 of them were in favor of the idea.
However, the idea is unlikely to be put into practice. According to experts in landscaping administration, leaving those leaves on the ground is not good for urban safety and sanitation.
Leaves blown into the air by the wind can obstruct the vision of drivers and leaves on the ground are a hidden fire hazard and can cause drain blockages.
