Work starts on site for Cosco unit

US-based warehouse wholesaler Costco recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a new membership-only shoppers’ club on Lianyou Road in Huacao Town.
Construction is expected to be completed in September 2019. The company is also planning a second store in the Pudong New Area.
Costco operated a site on Alibaba’s online retail platform Tmall for several years, before deciding to open its first bricks-and-mortar store on the mainland. Getting Chinese customers to accept the idea of “pay first, shop later” might be the biggest challenge for the brand.
Zhang Sihan, a Costco chief executive for the Asian region, praised the cooperation of Minhang officials in the process of getting speedy approval for the new store.
It’s all part of a district effort to bring more overseas investment to Minhang. The campaign is being spearheaded by the district’s Investment Service Center.
