You don't need to be a student to enjoy the delights of campus

UNIVERSITIES are not only centers of learning, they also offer tranquil environments for putting aside daily stresses and thinking, resting or even daydreaming. Join us on a tour of some of the best attractions university campuses in Minhang have to offer.

Traditional Chinese Opera Museum

The Traditional Chinese Opera Museum sits on the Minhang campus of the Shanghai Theater Academy. It's a hidden gem showcasing the history, costumes, characters and great performers of Kunqu, Peking, Yueju and other traditional operas. Elaborate costumes, ornaments, swords, props and musical instruments are on display.

Traditional Chinese opera, sometimes called the "crown of Chinese culture," dates back to the Han (206 BC-AD 220) and Tang (AD 618-907) dynasties.

Among the most precious exhibits at the museum is an embroidered robe worn by Gai Jiaotian (1888-1971), a Peking Opera master and one of the most influential figures in the "martial" genre of the opera. The robe was donated by Gai's relatives.

All the costumes were handmade using the famous Su-style (from Suzhou) of needlework. The robes were crafted from silk, satins and brocades, and some designs feature gold and silver thread. Pearls were often used, too, and traditional dragon and phoenix patterns were frequently embroidered into the design.

The museum also displays furniture commonly used at residences of northern China. The furniture dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). An antique carved bed is also not to be missed.

Jifeng Bookstore Branch

Jifeng Bookstore's branch on the Minhang campus of East China Normal University retains the intellectual ambience that has long distinguished the book chain franchise.

The shop has a stock of 40,000 books, specializing in the social sciences and other humanities. Lectures are periodically held at the bookstore.

The setting offers a sedate and cozy refuge from the urban treadmill. Pick a sofa seat near the window, sip a cup of coffee with homemade biscuits and browse through your favorite books on a sunny autumn afternoon. If you are lucky in your timing, you may hear the beautiful melodies often sung by staff to the accompaniment of guitar.

Botanic Garden

Minhang's first botanic garden is located on the Minhang campus of Jiao Tong University, offering visitors the opportunity to view more than 1,000 varieties of plants from around the world.

The magic of this floral fantasyland covering 55,000 square meters is immediate upon entering. The senses are enlivened by begonias, peach blossoms, bonsais, trees, rare herbs and aquatic plants. The park-like setting features ponds, narrow paths, bridges, pavilions, rockeries and courtyards.

The majority of the plants on display are from East China regions, especially neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. Each plant is signed so you can identify species and their origins. Some are the plants are rare or even on the verge of extinction.

Zizhu Binjiang Avenue

Zizhu Binjiang Avenue is a 15-minute bicycle ride from the Minhang campuses of East China Normal and Jiao Tong universities. Though not actually on either campus, the site provides beautiful views.

On the street, there is an oxygen bar shrouded in greenery. Walking along the bank of the Huangpu River, you will see ships and egrets. A picnic on the lawn is a popular way of relaxation among residents living in the area.

Yingtao River

The Yingtao River flows through the Minhang campus of East China Normal University. The river is as beautiful as its name indicates. Yingtao means "cherry" in Chinese.

The river has a long history, dating back to the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties. It was formerly known as Xingdou Lake. It is said that there was an old village on the banks of the river, and Xing and Dou were the surnames of the two biggest families in the area. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the families declined and the name of the lake was changed.

Siyuan Lake

Sunlight flecks on water, lakeside weeping willows and picturesque footbridges provide a tranquil backdrop at Siyuan Lake on Jiao Tong University's Minhang campus.

Sitting on a wooden bench alongside the lake, you may idle time away by catnapping, reading books or just letting your mind wander.

Another popular attraction where students and teachers often congregate is along the shores of Zhiyuan Lake, which is said to be most beautiful at sunset. A replica of the Arch of Triumph at the south gate of the campus is also a spot not to be missed.
