The heart and soul of Expo
THE volunteer logo for the World Expo 2010 Shanghai looks both like the Chinese character xin (heart) and the English letter "V."
Its meaning is clear: Volunteers serve with their heart.
Indeed, volunteers are an indispensable part of Expo, since there is so much work to do.
Volunteer recruitment for Expo 2010 began on May 1 and will end on December 31.
Those chosen will work inside and outside the Expo site on tasks including giving out information, receiving visitors, keeping order, being tour guides, translation, helping the handicapped, managing services and many others.
Organizers have set up 72 recruitment sites at universities, working units and residential areas in Shanghai and, in addition, online application is also available. Up to now there have been more than 320,000 applicants from all walks of life -- college students, working professionals, retired people as well as foreign visitors.
There will be tests for each applicant before he or she finally becomes a member of the volunteer group.
Those who are chosen, regardless of their background, will all undergo the same training with variations according to the different volunteer jobs they will take, before they will be ready to carry out their duties at next year's Expo.
By then they will all be familiar with the volunteer slogans -- "At Your Service? At Expo," "My Will, My Help, My Pleasure," "2010, We're Together As One" and "Our City, Your Joy." All slogans that give voice to the volunteers' hopes and dreams.
