Top lawyer recognized for public service

WHILE most people prefer to read, watch a movie, or do physical exercises after work, a lawyer spends his spare time helping the needy and considers it as the best way to relax.

Lu Yan, a co-founder of Shanghai-based firm Rongfu, was named as one of the most influential law figures of the year by China Central Television. He handles financial cases of top domestic and foreign enterprises. But the CCTV recognition was not for his performance in the court but for his public service.

Lu, 38, looks after 1,000 autistic children and serves as a legal counsel for 100 volunteer organizations. He got involved with autistic children when he and some other young lawyers worked as volunteers on the hotline 12355 for teenagers.

With the support of Shanghai Volunteer Corps, Shanghai Bureau of Justice and Shanghai Bar Association, Lu formed a volunteer team to work with children with autism. All the members are legal professionals and law enforcement officers.

Lu and his team deal with more than 20,000 families with children who are autistic. They offer legal advice, music rehabilitation, psychological counseling and fund raising.

The group then started offering services to needy people, laid-off workers and elderly people with no family.

Lu’s team cooperated with several public welfare platforms to provide them with legal support and advice and improve the organization’s capabilities. It has provided legal support to nearly 200,000 volunteers, who then serve more than a million people in need.

At present, Lu and his team are working to set up a counter in Shanghai free trade zone with lawyers who can speak multiple languages to provide legal services.

Dozens of bilingual or multi-lingual lawyers have joined the plan. The counter will be established at the service hall of FTZ to serve potential investors, start-ups and makers as well as enterprises and their staff within FTZ.
