Winter games see growing popularity
MORE people are taking part in winter sports in Shanghai, particularly skating. The Greenland Cup Skating Championships of the Second Shanghai Citizen Games welcomed a record number of participants recently. Organizers even added one more day for additional competitions.
At present, there are four ice rinks in Shanghai, including one at the Sanlin Sports Center in Pudong.
The Feiyang Skating Center was founded by Yang Yang, a former Chinese short track speed skater and current International Olympic Committee member. Yang is a two-time Olympic Champion from the 2002 Winter Olympics and a six-time Overall World Champion for 1997-2002.
The double-decker skating center has an international standard rink of 1,830 square meters and can host 5,000 spectators.
It is one of the two rinks in the city that meet the requirements to hold international games.
The center also has high-quality locker rooms and a lounge for referees. Its 1,026 square meters of practice area is open to the public.
It offers training in ice hockey, figure skating, short track and curling. An ice hockey camp by NHL team Los Angeles Kings was held at the center this summer.
Ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, China wants to get 300 million citizens involved in winter sports. The central government has issued plans to build more than 500 ice skating rinks and 240 ski slopes before 2021.
