Art explores the city as a living organism

THE latest exhibition from Island6, the art collective Liu Dao, uses multimedia to explore the relationship between the human organism and the city of Shanghai, an urban organism.

The "Body-City Mechanism" exhibition uses LED, photography, video, animation, sculpture and interactive artwork to explore the personality, vitality and potential of the city. Interactive artwork and installations deal with ideas of urban growth, biological design and metropolitan identity.

The idea behind the exhibition is that cities are not static, but change all the time. Like living creatures, they grow, change and decay. They have identities and personalities of their own.

"Flux, systematic interactions and metabolic exchanges now determine the geography of a new urban individuality, a city as body," the exhibition materials say.

The show incorporates elements of the traditional jianzhi (????), or paper cutting, and rice paper illuminations. The art directors are Thomas Charveriat and Nick Hersey. Music is composed by David Keohane.
