Community wins prize with environmental work
The Yinghuayuan Community in Zhenru Town has won the first prize at the second Yuanyang Community Environmental Public Welfare Prize for their excellent management and residents’ strong awareness of protecting the environment.
The community excelled at sorting garbage, which reduces waste. Besides advocacy and the residents’ own efforts, the town administrators also invited social environmental protection organizations and a team of doctors from the Environmental and Engineering College of Fudan University to instruct and supervise.
After a year, waste was reduced by 43 percent.
Yinghuayuan has won many honors in energy conservation and environmental protection. According to Xu Peiying, the neighborhood committee director, there is no shortcut in achieving the goals, which means they must “work hard, solid and smart.”
The community has a total of 985 households, 75 residential advisers and another 20 volunteers who take responsibility for their assigned tenants.
At one time, residents with little environmental awareness would throw trash anywhere. But the neighborhood committee members began doing rounds in the morning when they go to work and pick up trash. Now there’s almost no littering, and they only need to check weekly instead of daily.
“You have to start from the small things, and it’s best to interact with the residents,” according to Xu.
