Cultural activities take center stage

PUTUO residents will have a feast of cultural activities this year as the district will host more than 1,000 events at parks, commercial centers and schools that are expected to benefit 1 million people.

The events are part of the citywide Shanghai Citizen Cultural Festival initiated by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV on March 23. More than 6,000 events are planned from March to June.

The first group of 21,000 people enjoyed more than 100 events across Putuo on March 23 for Culture Service Day, the first highlight of the year-long series, according to the Putuo Cultural Bureau.

On that day, public cultural institutions and organizations in Putuo including the library, galleries, museums and community activity centers offered a variety of shows and exhibitions as well as lectures and training sessions.

Putuo Art Gallery and the Putuo Artists Association co-hosted an exhibition for the first time. Eighty pieces ranging from traditional Chinese paintings to watercolor paintings were on display.

Wang Jiafang, president of the Putuo Artists Association, created "Staying Idle by the Clouds" for the exhibition.

Senior professionals, art professors and students from art institutions, as well as fine arts enthusiasts also contributed pieces.

The paintings will be exhibited at the gallery for one month. After that they will be displayed in different communities around the district to provide better access to more residents. The organizers hope to introduce fine arts to the general public while promoting more innovation in artistic creation.

Later on March 23, Putuo Library invited renowned sociologist Lu Zhen to give a lecture to about 1,000 people on current social phenomenon from the perspective of culture. The library staged a traditional opera in Shanghainese that evening and was crowded with the opera fans.

Community centers across the district also hosted various events and bazaars on that day.

In Caoyang, 40 non-profit organizations set up a charity gift bazaar. Some of the money is used to help students with economic difficulties in the community.

Sixteen mothers in Changzheng Community staged "Mamma Mia," a show in which they told stories in Shanghai dialect and sang songs about things happening in the neighborhood.

Putuo plans more cultural events in the months ahead that will be themed around the iconic Suzhou Creek.

Activities will showcase the district's economic, social and cultural development while also searching for top art work and artists, and attracting more ordinary citizens to the cultural activities.

Competitions will be held in music, dance, painting, photography, collecting, calligraphy and creativity, cultural officials said.
