Cultural event brings art to residents
As part of the 2015 Shanghai Citizens Art Festival, the Suzhou Creek Culture and Art Festival kicked off in Putuo District on March 28. The district government organized more than 50 cultural events at local public libraries, art museums and community culture centers that day across the district. Authorities plan to hold 1,000 such events during the festival, which runs until the end of the year. The series will be divided by season, and together is expected to attract more than 1 million visitors.
Something for everyone
This year’s theme is “The Wonderful Interaction between Culture and Life.”
The Putuo district government planned a wide range of events for culture lovers.
A photography exhibition opened to the public at the Putuo District Culture Center at the start of the event series. Photos from professional photographers such as Yang Yuanchang, Lu Yuanmin and Chen Jun capture the beauty of Putuo on film. Meanwhile, the Center Art Troupe staged a performance that included dancing, chorus singing and folk music at the center; while musical artists prepared selections from classic works.
Also of note, a portrait photography exhibition entitled “The Winter Fairytale — In Their 90s” by photographer Lin Bingliang reopened to the public at the Putuo District Library.
For children, 35 competitions and events were held at the district’s children’s library as part of the 18th Dongdongle Children Showcase Program. Many local students took part in calligraphy and paper cutting competitions, talent shows and other activities such as reading workshops.
One of the district government’s main goals for the festival was to enrich the lives of local residents through culture programs and events.
Stepping into the spotlight
The government staged a number of performances at local sub-districts, making it possible for residents to enjoy art at their doorsteps. The Shanghai Qinyuan Huju Opera Troupe visited the Caoyang Community, performing a selection of classic Chinese opera works along with acrobatic feats and magic shows.
For residents in the Yichuan Community, the festival brought a number of traditional opera performances. A pingtan performance — a form of narrative singing — of the classic “Tale of White Snake” was also staged.
Of course, the events were designed not only to entertain local residents but also to give them a stage to showcase their own talents.
A competition for dance lovers was organized at the Changzheng Community Cultural Activity Center. Poems from local citizens were also read as part of a tour of Changzheng Town.
At the same time, a singing contest in the recently established Wanli Sub-district gathered talented performers and community choir members to show off their musical talent. The Changshou Community held a series of events including a family concert, a Huju opera performances and a photography exhibition for its residents; while Ganquan and Shiquan communities brought together their choirs and dance teams to stage an exciting performance.
