Do-gooders give youth drama class

Two young office workers who successfully set up a children鈥檚 library at the Brilliant City residential community last August have also organized a series of drama classes aimed at children and parents.
Co-workers You Rong and Liu Jun offer their programs for free with the help of university student volunteers. You is a resident of Brilliant City, while Liu lives in Hongkou District. While working together in the same office, the two women discovered they had a shared interest in charitable activities aimed at children. With the help of Brilliant City鈥檚 third neighborhood committee, the pair were offered a 10-square-meter space in an activity room where they could create a children鈥檚 library.
Xiaohongfan Kindergarten helped to promote the library, which quickly gained the attention of local families and children. To keep children coming back, the duo collaborated with volunteers from East China Normal University on a two-month drama training program offered on weekends for children.
With space limited, only five children were recruited. The small group size though allowed for a custom-made training program for each child.
The women say they hope the program can help children perform and express themselves, allowing participating youngsters to experience a more diverse education. The pair have organized other activities as well, including a mock garage sale and a treasure hunt. They also plan to bring the children to local supermarkets, where they can compare prices and build basic financial literacy.
The pair devote most of their weekends, as well as time during the week, to their volunteer program. Although Liu has to travel to Brilliant city for each activity, she finds that its rewards are worth the trip.
