Environmental protection plan proves a breath of fresh air to local residents
THE fifth phase of Putuo District's environmental protection plan launched last year has achieved positive results, the 2012 overall environment quality report shows.
The plan covers 66 projects from eight major fields, and runs until the end of next year. By the end of 2012, 58 projects had been started, with 13 of these completed by the year end.
Three major watercourses in the district - Suzhou Creek, Taopu River and Zhenru Port - have seen significant improvements, with atmospheric environment quality improvement rates of 11.8 percent, 23.2 percent and 8.1 percent respectively, the report, released last month, found.
In the 366 daily air quality reports, the top contamination came from particles - accounting for primary pollution 97.8 percent of the time. Another pollution source is nitrogen dioxide.
Dust pollution in the district was down 4.5 percent compared to 2011. The monthly average for 2012 was 6.4 tons of dust per square kilometer. Most came from building sites.
Putuo took several measures to reduce dust pollution. Monitoring equipment was set up at construction sites and major roads, and dust control training sessions were held.
Another form of pollution affecting residents' daily lives is noise.
In 2012, the average daytime noise level decreased by 17 percent to 46.4dB in the evening since the year before, according to the environment report.
Meanwhile, seven companies have finished industrial restructuring that saves 401.6 tons of coal a year.
And with an investment of 104.45 million yuan (US$17 million), three companies completed a clean production audit, which can save 4,042.9 tons of water every year and decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 545.11 tons.
The environment has improved steadily over the years and Putuo continues striving to improve it.
The district was once a heavy industrial area, so making changes is crucial.
