Events make Spring Festival fun and fruitful
Putuo District had a lively celebration of the Chinese New Year with 96 events, including performances, concerts, film screenings, exhibitions and readings during the holiday season.
It also was a prosperous holiday season for Putuo’s merchants, as the district registered 276 million yuan (US$45.49 million) in total sales revenue during the seven-day holiday period which was January 31 to February 6. The sales of the week before (January 24-30) reached 273 million yuan, a 5.3 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Global Harbor, the largest shopping mall in Shanghai, erected an installation of 18 golden horses to welcome the Chinese New Year. During the holiday, they also hosted concerts, lion dancing and other folk shows, attracting 580,000 visitors.
Booming business
Parkside Plaza in Changfeng made a large wishing wall for customers to write greeting messages and wishes on colorful, butterfly-shaped paper.
The sales of gold jewelry at Bailian Zhonghuan Commerce Plaza saw a 22 percent year-to-year jump. Shopping mall MM21 opened till midnight on January 29 and had a sweepstakes with gold bars as prizes. Sales that day were 2.5 times higher than on an average day.
Supermarkets not only extended opening hours, but also designated sections for New Year’s shopping, putting drinks, roasted nuts, dried fruits and other popular holiday goods in conspicuous places.
The Carrefour store in Wanli had total sales 152.9 percent higher than the previous January 25.
Cultural activities this year encouraged participation by residents, in some cases handing the stage to them. On January 21, a celebration party attended by people from all walks of life included a team of folk artists. They included award-winning dancers and acrobatic troupe that performed at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
Libraries, galleries and community activity centers stayed open during the festival. They put up festive decorations and offered a variety of events for everyone to enjoy.
Liu Haisu Art Museum had an exhibition of famous Russian oil paintings. About 70 works from galleries and museums in Russia were displayed, including paintings by Ilya Repin (1844-1930), widely considered the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century and sometimes called the Leo Tolstoy of painting.
Cultural events
Taopu Cultural Center presented seven special galas to celebrate the Spring Festival, including general and traditional opera performances.
The district’s cultural center launched a series of events, including bringing the stage outside for open-air performances.
Huxi Cinema had a team to screen films in communities.
Community activity centers in Shiquan, Caoyang and Changzheng hosted events that included inviting calligraphy lovers to come out to write Spring Festival couplets.
