Fun, educational children鈥檚 programs

Putuo District is offering a variety of children’s programs and services this summer so they can have a fun and safe vacation.
First up are a range of summer classes for primary school students whose parents are busy working. These classes (8am to 4:30pm from Monday to Friday) offer courses in safety education, traditional culture, Chinese etiquette, science and handicrafts.
Daytime classes
In addition to experienced teachers, a group of college students have also volunteered to look after children and help with their homework. During intervals they play games with the kids.
Officials said the summer classes are a collaboration between communities and schools. Each class lasts around three weeks. So far more than 300 children have enrolled across the district.
The government provides a subsidy to make the classes affordable. It’s 600 yuan (US$96.8) for each three-week class.
Cai Cong teaches at one of the summer classes held by Caoyang Community Service Center and said they have purchased insurance for each child.
“Staff from the local hospitals also offer medical care for the 30 or so students in the class,” Cai added.
Tang Jin, a mother of two, sends her 8-year-old daughter to the class. She is glad to see her daughter becoming more outgoing and confident.
“My daughter has had a lot of fun at the class,” said Tang. “It is a good chance for her to spend more time with her peers.”
Cultural activities
Meanwhile, students are also being encouraged to get in touch with nature and farm life at the Anting base of the district’s social practice center for primary and middle schools. They can pick peaches and plant vegetables. It also offers a chance for children to observe and learn about different plants and be amazed at the planet’s biodiversity.
To commemorate China’s 70th anniversary of victory in World War II, public schools in Putuo District have organized a series of educational events.
Students have paid visits to the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, the patriotism education base and the martyrs cemetery.
Photography exhibitions are underway to give children an understanding of what the war was about.
Some other well-received programs this summer include a reading club, sporting events, a summer camp and themed lectures.
