IT professional creates new path with tea technology company
Ye Yangsheng’s road as an entrepreneur may have seemed less certain at one time, when he took a turn nobody expected, switching from information technology to tea-related businesses.
Ye, now 42, graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China with a degree in computer science. In 1994, he began a career in IT and was quite successful.
Born in Wuyishan City, in tea-growing Fujian Province, Ye always has an interest in tea. But it got him thinking that as its place of origin, China doesn’t have a national tea brand like Lipton in the United Kingdom.
Ye realized that traditional ways of consuming tea could not be standardized from manufacturer to the market, but he still saw opportunities in traditional industries and founded Tiantai Tea Science and Technology Company in 2009.
The company is committed to research and development of “intelligent” tea systems, while paying close attention to customers’ needs and promotion of tea culture, he said.
Developing a tea brewer similar to the Keurig coffee brewer may seem like an odd idea to some. Even though Keurig has introduced tea for its machines, Ye said it often took hours for him to explain his tea machine to other people.
His company’s star product, LEPOD, is a simple yet advanced tea maker offering over 40 different kinds of tea packaged in small containers. It takes only one to two minutes to brew, and the machine controls temperature, amount of water and time using smart identification codes.
A revolutionary product in a traditional industry, LEPOD has made a general standard for quality possible, Ye said.
The company plans to promote the product in Shanghai first, and in a few years expand it to other cities nationwide.
