Keeping district clean

EVERY month, volunteers at the Caoyang community meet to clean up the neighborhood, disposing of garbage on main roads, streets and gardens, and keeping residential blocks neat and tidy.

This is part of the district-wide effort in Putuo to become a national model of clean community.

Launched in March, volunteers in Caoyang community include retired women workers, with an average age of 65.

Through their efforts, the environment has improved significantly in the area.

There are now no advertising fliers on residential building walls nor objects cluttering up hallways.

For the past four years, a safety and health team launched by the neighborhood committee has patrolled the residential area every morning. They record safety or health hazards and either tackle these themselves or report back to supervisors.

To help the volunteer team complete their tasks efficiently, the neighborhood is divided into 10 blocks, each with 10 buildings.
