Male nurses prove they also have heart

A team of 13 male nurses has made a big impact at Putuo Central Hospital. Although traditionally and predominantly considered a female profession, male nurses have proven they have what it takes to care for sick and injured individuals.
The most experienced member of the team is Wang Jianyun, who is 27 years old. He has worked on Chinese New Year’s Eve for the past three years.
“The neurosurgery, general surgery and cardio-thoracic surgery departments require stability and safety while moving patients,” Wang said. “We need to be careful every time. These departments treat many car accident victims and there are many emergencies. Good judgment is crucial.”
Ni Minggang has been working in the emergency room department for three years. His eight-hour shift is fast-paced and non-stop.
“ER is the forefront of the hospital, we are always prepared to race with time,” Ni said.
Facing many large disasters like food poisoning cases and severe traffic accidents, Ni said “male nurses have an important role to play in health care.
“Seeing patients recover makes me happy, so I like this job,” he said.
Wang Donglin is one of the most popular nurses in general medicine. Though the work is hard, Wang insists on taking the best care of his patients.
Earlier this year, he encountered a mother who had just lost her daughter. She was devastated and refused to take her medicine. From 9am to 1pm every day, Wang stayed by her side and helped her give up the idea of suicide. Eventually the woman agreed to be treated.
Gui Yanhua, head nurse of SICU and ER, said when they first met the male nurses they had doubts about their carefulness, but they soon proved themselves. Gui added that they are very good at offering psychological counseling to patients.
The hospital said it values male nurses and hosts training events to help improve their skills.
