New Pop art from China, Japan and South Korea
A Chinese artist, a Japanese artist and a South Korean artist feature nonpolitical New Pop art and animation that are both humorous and insightful on social issues.
The Shun Art Gallery in M50 is exhibiting works by Gong Xinru, Yuki Matsueda and Kim Junsik.
Gong and Matsueda exhibit three-dimensional works expressing the humor in everyday life.
Kim’s paintings, using skillful technique, are more philosophical and address Eastern and Western cultural values.
New Pop refers to the first movement of political pop art in China that appeared in the 1980s and 1990s.
Today, artists born in the 1970s and 1980s are breaking away from political pop and creating works with borderless concepts, humor and intriguing self-reflection that are not indifferent to social issues.
The exhibition also features a retrospective of fashion works of Korean designer Choi Changho, who appears frequently in fashion weeks in China, Japan and Korea.
“We hope our attempts will bring you pleasant imagination and relaxing feelings as in a daydream,” said the exhibition’s curator Shun.
