New child-friendly hospital in Putuo
The new, 550-bed Children’s Hospital of Shanghai in Putuo District will be super child-friendly with electronic tablets everywhere so young patients can entertain themselves, chat, summon nurses, and learn about their ailments.
The colorful, state-of-the-art children’s facility is expected to open next year in Changfeng Ecology Business District. The opening has not yet been scheduled as final construction is still underway.
The hospital will be completely digitalized and operationally transparent so that people know exactly about billing and which services, procedures and medications they are paying for.
Children can borrow electronic tablets (unless they have their own) to play games or watch videos while they wait or while receiving intravenous drips. When the intravenous solution bags are almost empty, children can use their tablets to alert nurses.
They can also learn on their tablets about their ailments, from asthma to broken bones, and their treatment.
Doctors will use tablets to electronically track patients, getting their latest condition, history, treatment and lab reports. They also write treatment plans. Nurses use personal digital assistant terminals to record real-time data such as temperature and blood pressure.
The intensive care unit zones will install video visiting system allowing patients to communicate with each other.
As expected, the interior is colorful, fun and relaxing. It features cartoon animal footprints on the floor and fairy tales depicted on walls, giving young patients something interesting to see and think about.
A play area will have soft flooring and safe game installations for children. Going to the hospital is never enjoyable, but the idea is to make it child-friendly and hospitable, with gardens, a plaza and rooftop terrace.
Like the Children’s Hospital of Shanghai on Beijing Road W., the new hospital in Changfeng will give each department different colors each floor different cartoon characters, such as elephants, rabbits and fish.
When a child says she or he wants to go to the blue fish floor, they are directed to the right place.
All medical equipment will be state of the art, such as 64-slice CT scans, multifunctional operating theaters and automatic medication adjustment.
