Novel idea reduces catkins

PUTUO District has been taking biological control measures to reduce the amount of catkins produced by poplar, phoenix and willow trees.

Catkins are small flower-like clusters that fall from trees. They can cause allergic reactions in people. In areas where there are many such trees, the situation can be serious.

Moving or cutting down the trees is costly and time consuming, plus it also harms the urban ecological environment. New trees that have been planted to replace them can takes years to grow.

Putuo has been injecting a liquid agent into trees in the past few years, an approach introduced from Beijing that works by suppressing bud differentiation.

The process is neither harmful to the trees nor local wildlife, and at 10 yuan (US$1.60) per bottle — which is enough to treat 15 trees for two years.
