Putuo endeavors to attract more multi-national companies

METRO Group, the German retail magnate, will open its latest membership hypermarket in China in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, as it has received approval earlier this year.

METRO set up its China headquarters in Putuo in 1995 and now it runs 56 large hypermarkets in 39 Chinese cities with around 9,000 full-time employees and over 3 million regular customers. The new membership hypermarket will be in Nanchang's Honggu Mall.

It is just one example of the many foreign companies that chose to have their China headquarters in Putuo due to factors such as convenient transportation, excellent resources and accommodating lifestyle, according to officials from Putuo Commission of Commerce.

Wooing investment

Other multinational companies that have their China headquarters in Putuo include Spanish supermarket chain DIA and French textile group Beaumanoir. Dia will open 35 new supermarkets this year in Shanghai and Beaumanoir plans to open 1,000 stores in China.

Attracting foreign investment has long been a key focus of Putuo's economic growth and commercial expansion. As it shifts from building shopping malls to large urban complexes with various features, more opportunities and possibilities are provided, according to commerce commission officials.

Now the district is trying to attract multinational companies to locate their headquarters here by emphasizing modern service industries, such as the tax-free logistics center at Shanghai Northwest Logistics Park in Putuo's Taopu area that helps facilitate trade.

In the future, Putuo will strive to build more stores, including those online, and upgrade existing ones, commerce officials said.

They believe to build a healthy business environment that satisfies the needs of modern companies is crucial to improve overall service amenities. "Attracting foreign capital isn't just about getting the money in, but also ensuring it stays," they said.

The plans include building the Changfeng transnational purchase platform and the Taopu fashion industry information service platform, which will provide services from design and product presentation to brand management and information release.
