Separating garbage for better environment
PEOPLE living at the Henglong Lijing Apartments in Putuo District have been separating their garbage for the past three years to improve the local environment.
The system was introduced in 2011, said Zhao Xiang, director of the owners committee, but it took some time for residents to become fully aware of the importance of separating their garbage.
"Firstly we let the home owners and residents realize how important it is to separate the garbage," said Zhao.
Members of the owners committee and group leaders of each building are working as volunteers. Five foreigners who live in the community are among them. "They come to do volunteer work in their free time," Zhao said. "In addition to promoting the garbage separation, they also do work like standing by the garbage bins to remind people."
Zhao said that after the residents succeeded in separating dry and wet garbage, they expanded the categories to harmful and usable garbage.
Henglong Lijing has about 119 families of more than 500 residents. Occasionally, when residents forget to separate the garbage, there are cleaners who go through it again.
One of the results of the scheme is a creative sculpture made from more than 7,000 milk cartons and four chairs made from the same materials.
Residents are also working on more projects cooperating with businesses and companies, such as negotiating a rewards program with China Everbright Bank to encourage residents.
"The environmental protection works should start from everyone and every family," Zhao said.
