Students volunteer at hospital

STUDENTS from Shanghai Caoyang No 2 High School used their winter holiday to volunteer at Putuo Central Hospital.
Interns who took part in the one-day program were shown how the hospital works.
According to Wu Fang, an official with the hospital, the volunteer base set up in 2013 has recently been honored as one of Shanghai’s best 10 volunteer communities.
“Volunteers from neighboring schools and enterprises have been engaged in diverse charity events to assist and comfort our patients,” said Wu. “The base also has a WeChat public account for effective communication and management.”
Doctors and nurses treated the teenagers like medical school students and taught them one by one.
Interns were given the opportunity to stay with medical professionals at their work place. After the program they shared their experience with others.
Wu Shiyu from grade 10 class 7 said, “It is very quiet in the morning at the intensive care unit. Nurses are busy preparing drugs. It felt peaceful there. Doctors and nurses made me feel at ease. I hear patients groaning with pain. I see concentrated eyes of doctors and nurses, and that made me think about word from the TV show ‘Emergency Room’ — ‘There is pain in life, but it’s good to have you here.”
Lu Chenchao from grade 11 class 2 said, “It looks easy when doctors diagnose, but there are unremitting efforts behind their work; it looks calm when doctors diagnose, but the stories behind are always warm. Persistence represents love and perseverance to the job.”
During the winter vacation, teachers and students of Putuo District also displayed their own calligraphy and paper-cutting works of traditional Chinese couplets and the Chinese character fu to extend their wishes for good fortune and happiness in the new year.
Mei Zihan, a children’s book author, was also invited to give lectures for students at the winter vacation reading club.
