Taopu builds 鈥榮ponge city鈥 to manage rainwater

TAOPU Smart City in Putuo District will be included in a pilot “sponge city” program which aims to create more green space to absorb rainwater and channel it underground for use during droughts.
As part of the program, grassed ditches, water-penetrating pavement, greenery rooftops and wetlands are designed to store rainwater. Scenic water pools will also be used to control rainwater and prevent flooding.
Underneath Taopu Central Park is a huge underground water pool, which can store about 30,000 cubic meters of water per day. This initiative is meant to reduce nearby flooding risks by diverting water into the park’s lake.
The program in Taopu will use a new road material developed by STEC. The tunneling and civil engineering company recently revealed its latest innovations: a range of new road-building materials.
The materials are all highly water absorbent. One of these new materials, known as water penetrating asphalt, can allow water to penetrate it at a rate of 4,000 metric liters per minute. Roads constructed with this material will have less water pooling on them during heavy rains.
Another material known as ASWOOD is made from sawdust and allows water to penetrate road surfaces to reach roots and plants underneath it. This material will be suitable for roads in urban parks and residential neighborhoods surrounded by green space, said Yan Jun, deputy chief engineer at STEC, the civil engineering company.
Another type of material can store rainfall, which then evaporates when the sun returns. This material can also reduce temperatures associated with the “heat island” effect.
This new asphalt material has already been used on a section of Middle Ring Road close to the Puxi side of the Shangzhong Road Tunnel, and on a 500-meter-long section north of the Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road’s crossing with Jinshajiang Road.
