Wish lists improve communication with seniors
Caoyang Community in Putuo District has taken a series of measures to improve elderly care and to encourage more people to volunteer and help seniors.
Community officials put 13 special mailboxes in Xingmei Neighborhood as a trial. Elderly residents can write down their wishes and drop the letters in the mailbox. The letters are collected every Monday morning and are discussed by community officials before taking any action.
On the first day, more than 10 wish cards were received. Most of them were about organizing trips. Some seniors hoped the community could arrange health checkups and offer more areas for them to exercise.
However, the initiative was not the first Caoyang Community has taken to improve the life of senior residents. The community has handed out more than 28,200 wish lists since 2013. Nearly half of the 9,353 wishes the community received have been realized.
An elderly woman surnamed Yao said she expressed a desire for a day-trip to Shanghai’s suburbs and wrote it down on the wish list last year. Soon, she got help from community employees.
In the future, another 19 neighborhoods will set up similar mailboxes so community officials can learn the needs of seniors.
