5,000 take part in New Year climb
About 5,000 people climbed to the top of Sheshan Hill in Songjiang District on New Year’s Day in 2014.
It’s a tradition in China to climb a tall building, mountain or hill, expressing an expectation of growth or progress in the new year.
The eighth Sheshan Climbing Event took place in East Sheshan Park of Sheshan National Forest Park.
Two choices of routes were offered to climbers after a 2.2-kilometer jog that started at Happy Valley ended at East Sheshan Park.
Route 1 began with a 368-step uphill climb approaching the watchtower then descended at a cove to the South Gate of East Sheshan Park.
The other route cut half of the 368-step trek and added a refreshing stop in the forest and other field activities.
Along the climbing path, wishing walls were set up at three stops where climbers left their signatures and new year wishes.
A wishing area was also placed on top of Sheshan Hill for climbers to express their new year’s wishes by fastening red ribbons in the designated places.
According to the organizers, personal accident insurance was provided for all participants this year.
The annual climbing event was first launched in 2007 and has become an iconic new year’s outdoor activity for Shanghai citizens and tourists.
