Beneficial insects studied
A city-level green program studying the feasibility of preventing insect damage using other, beneficial insects has been taken up by Songjiang Green Plant Protection and Monitor Center recently.
The first research subject is dastarcus helophoroides, a parasite of the citrus longhorn beetle. Dastarcus helophoroides is capable of feeding on the longhorn beetle and thus killing the pest, according to experts.
Citrus longhorn beetle is a pest found in eastern China that poses a major threat to a range of plants such as sycamores, willows and red maples, agricultural experts said.
The research currently is focused on the captive breeding of dastarcus helophoroides, which scientists hope to apply in large quantities for plant protection after the research is completed.
In the breeding area, the eggs of dastarcus helophoroides are placed within a climate chest with 14 hours of dark and 10 hours of light to accelerate their maturation.
Barley pests, used to feed the dastarcus helophoroides, are easy to control since their wings drop off, according to a technician at the center.
